Condition Rating
The HMLTN Grading Scale
Each piece in our archive is vintage or pre-owned. We inspect every object to ensure our descriptions are as transparent as they are curated.
Our photographs act as the final, definitive record of an object’s state. We ask that you inspect all detailed imagery carefully, as photos are considered an official extension of the item’s condition description.
Pristine
- Definition: Like-new or "New Old Stock."
- Details: The item shows no signs of wear, scratches, or age-related patina. It is as close to its original manufactured state as possible.
Excellent
- Definition: Exceptional vintage quality with minimal signs of use.
- Details: May show incredibly faint surface wear consistent with careful handling over decades (e.g., light "shelf wear" on the bottom of a marble bowl). No chips, cracks, or deep scratches.
Very Good
- Definition: Beautifully preserved with light, honest character.
- Details: Minor imperfections that do not detract from the overall aesthetic—such as light patina on brass hardware or tiny "flea bites" on the base of a glass vase. Structurally perfect.
Good
- Definition: Significant character or visible history.
- Details: Notable wear such as heavier oxidation on metal, a repaired chip on a figurine, or visible crazing on pottery. These items are priced accordingly and chosen for their rare form despite their "lived-in" soul.
A Note on "Vintage Character"
At HMLTN Archive, we believe that some signs of age—like the natural darkening of brass or the subtle crazing of a 70-year-old glaze—add to the piece's provenance. We highlight these unique characteristics in our photography so you can buy with total confidence.
